Mixing Instructions

  2. Pour 195 g of the Plazma™ formula into the cold water, secure the cap on the bottle, and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds, or until thoroughly mixed. If done correctly, the shaking will foam the contents of the bottle.
  3. While the mixture is still foamed, pour in 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Biotest®t Intensified Liquid Flavoring and gently swirl the contents until thoroughly mixed. Allow the flavored mixture to clear the foam and form a semi-transparent liquid. The foam should clear within 60 seconds.

And when it comes to hardcore athletes, it's simply impossible to get an optimal mineral intake without designer supplementation.

You take a mineral formulation, you say?

Theoretically, that's smart... until you take a closer look at how minerals are absorbed by the body.

Unlike vitamins, minerals are inorganic. That means they're not of biological origin. They're related to silver and gold and all the rest of the elements you find on the periodic table.

It makes sense that the body would easily absorb organic things like vitamins, right? Likewise, it should make equal sense that the body doesn't easily absorb inorganic things like minerals very well.

For one thing, most minerals have a natural electric charge, which causes them to interact with other dietary components, making it impossible for the minerals to be absorbed. Direct Link to Diet

A lot of it can be traced directly to our diets. Humans originally consumed a natural diet of 1 to 1 or 1 to 2 ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids. (Just to refresh your memory, omega-6s are those fatty acids found in just about every packaged food you can find, in addition to those cooking oils that permeate your cupboard, while omega-3s are those that we typically associate with salmon and other cold water fish.).

Unfortunately, because of extreme food processing, raising cattle on corn instead of grass, avoidance of fish in the diet, and plain ol' greed and ignorance, the modern ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is more like 20 or 30 to 1.

That's a recipe for disaster.


Good and Bad Eicosanoids

At its most basic level, the problem lies with these primitive, rudimentary hormones called eicosanoids. These hormones are involved in pretty much everything our body does and if we ingest a lot of omega-6 fatty acids, we get eicosanoids made from omega-6s. Trouble is, omega-6 eicosanoids are really pro-inflammatory. The body makes eicosanoids from omega-3 fatty acids, too, but these eicosanoids are very weakly inflammatory, if at all. As such, simply shifting the diet towards omega-3's can do remarkable things for your health and performance.

Sure, you all know about fish oils and most of you, if you don't take them already, have been strongly considering adding them to your daily diet. Unfortunately, most of today's fatty acid supplements are simply made by some guy named Olaf who squeezes fish and forces the oil to drip into a bottle. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but not by much.


Most Fish Oil Supplements are Worthless

Most fatty acid supplements are underpowered, ill thought-out, prohibitively expensive and, by default, made for women.

Just as bad, the fish oil you're using is almost certainly beneficial to women instead of men. I'm sure you've all heard of DHA and EPA, which are two of the omega-3 fatty acids researchers are most interested in. They're simply elongated and desaturated versions of alpha-linoleic acid. Unfortunately, every fatty acid supplement we're aware of contains a lot more EPA than DHA because fish naturally contain more EPA than DHA.

That's fine for women because the biosynthesis of DHA is a lot higher in women than it is in men. Most researchers think it has to do with sex hormones, presumably estrogens. A strong stimulus with estrogens in lab subjects induces an increase in DHA status, while a Testosterone stimulus induces a decrease in DHA.

And men also have lower amounts of DHA – despite eating the same amount of fatty acids as women – but they have a higher incidence of heart attack (and presumably, other inflammatory conditions). As such, men need more DHA than women! Several studies have confirmed that fact.

DHA, in addition to having a anti-arrhythmic effect, reduces blood pressure and according to at least one study, even increases HDL (the good cholesterol) by 29% while EPA reduces it by 6.7%!.

Many athletes spend a lot of time trying to increase testosterone. Trouble is, when increasing testosterone some of it converts into estrogen in a process called aromatization, which takes place mostly in fat tissue and muscle.

In higher concentrations, it acts as an aromatase inhibitor. That means that it stops the body from whittling away at your Testosterone.

This is cool because if a substance stops Testosterone from being converted to estrogen or estradiol, it not only prevents the nasty effects of estrogen (loss of muscle and strength and accrual of body fat), but it increases your level of Testosterone, leading to additionalstrength and muscle!

What's equally important is that it won't cause your Testicles to go on vacation, i.e. shrink. The testicles don't get a signal from the pituitary to shut down because estrogen has been curtailed!

There's a lot of good data in animal models to back this up. Studies have demonstrated a resveratrol-fueled increase in Luteinizing Hormone and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (the pituitary hormones that signal the testicles to start producing Testosterone) that's 2.7 times greater than placebo.

Additionally, resveratrol caused a 76% increase in sperm count, all of this without any adverse effects. (1)

The aromatase inhibition is thought to occur through two mechanisms: reducing the expression of aromatase, as well as binding to the enzyme and preventing it from doing its dirty work.

And, unlike conventional aromatase inhibitors, resveratrol doesn't cause a decline in endothelial (blood vessel) function. In fact, it seems to improve it! (2-12)

And remember those nasty xenoestrogens I mentioned earlier? Resveratrol seems to occupy the receptor sites, or biological "parking lots," so that these xenoestrogens can't "park" in their spots. That's good.

What is Rhodiola?

Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola) thrives in extremely cold environments with intense sunlight, which explains why those Northern-dwelling Vikings were so familiar with it.

Rhodiola is one of those high-performance herbs that, in addition to having loads of "street cred," also has some pretty interesting science behind it.

Studies have shown that users can train longer, at higher levels, without overtraining. And it does this in a way that's different than conventional recovery models.

In 1968, Soviet pharmacologists determined that Rhodiola met all of the necessary criteria for classification as an adaptogen, which, as mentioned earlier, literally means that it helps the body adapt to – and resist – physical, chemical, and environmental stress. 

Forty years and over 180 research studies later, a growing body of Western scientists and physicians are beginning to study and consequently prescribe this "super herb."

Traditional uses of the plant include stimulating the nervous system, improving depression, enhancing work performance, improving sleep, eliminating fatigue, and preventing high-altitude sickness.

To make matters worse, regardless of the brand, there was a huge inconsistency between bottles. In other words, just because brand X worked once didn't mean that it'd work again. We simply couldn't find a brand to recommend that produced consistent results.

This inconsistency in the field was matched with inconsistency in the lab. While the scientific community's studied the herb for years, they couldn't come up with consistent results, either. 4-Terpineol, alanine, anethole, apigenin, ascorbic acid, beta carotene, caffeic acid, camphene, carvacrol, chlorogenic acid, chrysoeriol, eriodictyol, eugenol, ferulic acid, gallic acid, gamma-terpinene isocholorgenic acid, isoeugenol, isothymonin, kaempferol, labiatic acid, lauric acid, linalyl acetate, luteolin, methionine, myrcene, myristic acid, naringenin, oleanolic acid, p-coumoric acid, p-hydroxy-benzoic acid, palmitic acid, rosmarinic acid, selenium, tannin, thymol, tryptophan, ursolic acid, vanillic acid.

That's not the label of the new vitamin from the One-A-Day people. Rather, they're the antioxidants found in a sprig of thyme, which is the spice your momma sprinkles on meatloaf.

While you're no doubt familiar with many of these fruits and vegetables, some might be a mystery. We based our choices on a number of factors:

Vitex

Alpha-GPC the Compound

Alpha-GPC is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Clinically, it's been used both orally and intramuscularly to treat Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), as well as to improve memory, cognitive function, and learning.

Clearly, you don't have to be a physician to see that it has profound effects on the nervous system. However, prior to Dr. Ziegenfuss, not many researchers thought to test alpha-GPC on advanced athletes.

On the other hand, choline, which is a precursor to alpha-GPC, has been tested on athletes and shown to improve athletic performance and endurance.

The thinking is this: 

Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter that activates muscle contraction. Increasing the amount of acetylcholine (which is depleted by exercise) in cells can therefore keep muscles contracting longer and harder.

What Did the ALPHA-GPC Studies Show?

Dr. Ziegenfuss recruited experienced weight trainers and set out to test the effects of alpha-GPC on GH levels and explosive force, using a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over design.

We can't get into the precise protocol before the study is officially published, but we can tell you the highlights.


Study Protocol Highlights

Subjects consumed a dose of alpha-GPC 90 minutes prior to exercise.

They were then asked to perform 3 sets of bench-press throws using 50% of their pre-determined 1RM. 

Rep speed was measured using the Ballistic Measurement System (BMS).

Blood draws were taken 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes post-exercise.


Bench-Press Force Findings

Alpha-GPC increased peak force by 14% over and above the placebo value.


Growth Hormone Findings

Alpha-GPC doubled GH levels over the placebo value, post training.


How Does ALPHA-GPC Work?

Bottom line, alpha-GPC works. What isn't exactly clear is how it works, but Dr. Z has narrowed it down to two theories:

  • Leucine is the amino-acid "trigger" by which skeletal muscle accrues protein. Specifically, the muscle-building effects of leucine are due to a cascade of cellular reactions including the activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), upregulation of ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K1) activity, enhancement of eukaryotic initiation factor-4E binding protein (eIF4E-BP1) phosphorylation, and the association of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)4E with eIF4G. These effects have been shown to occur both in vitro and in humans.
  • Estimates of dietary requirements for leucine range from 1 g to 12 g daily. The amount of leucine necessary to optimize performance and muscle growth is unknown, but recent research in humans points to a plateau effect (at least on muscle protein synthesis) occurring around 3.5 grams per meal.
  • As we get older, muscles become less sensitive to the anabolic effects of insulin, protein, and amino acids (including leucine). As a result, peri-workout nutrition becomes more important to maximize our overall health and performance.
  • Leucine oxidation by muscle can be reduced by co-ingesting a high-quality carbohydrate, an effect that in theory should increase the anabolic signal to muscle growth.
