What is Rhodiola?

Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola) thrives in extremely cold environments with intense sunlight, which explains why those Northern-dwelling Vikings were so familiar with it.

Rhodiola is one of those high-performance herbs that, in addition to having loads of "street cred," also has some pretty interesting science behind it.

Studies have shown that users can train longer, at higher levels, without overtraining. And it does this in a way that's different than conventional recovery models.

In 1968, Soviet pharmacologists determined that Rhodiola met all of the necessary criteria for classification as an adaptogen, which, as mentioned earlier, literally means that it helps the body adapt to – and resist – physical, chemical, and environmental stress. 

Forty years and over 180 research studies later, a growing body of Western scientists and physicians are beginning to study and consequently prescribe this "super herb."

Traditional uses of the plant include stimulating the nervous system, improving depression, enhancing work performance, improving sleep, eliminating fatigue, and preventing high-altitude sickness.

Although more research is necessary to refine these findings, recent clinical trials on standardized extracts of Rhodiola rosea have reported impressive improvements in performance, immune function, cognitive function, and most commonly, a pronounced improvement in mood and a reduction in mental fatigue.

We'd recommend Rhodiola to competitive cyclists and intense gym rats, and the results were hit and miss; some athletes would rave about Rhodiola and some would report no perceived benefits. The conclusion was that one batch often varied enormously (in terms of potency) from the next.

How Do I Use Rhodiola?

  • Proponents of BCAA supplementation maintain that BCAA may blunt the increase in serotonin, thus reducing perceived effort and mental fatigue during prolonged exercise, and here's why:
  • A few recent studies have shown that men and women who ingest approximately 10 to 15 grams of BCAA per day (comprised of 5-7 g leucine, 3-4 g isoleucine, and 3-4 g valine) for at least four-weeks increase their lean mass more than matched control subjects. This effect appears to be the result of a BCAA-induced increased protein synthesis during the recovery period following resistance exercise.
  • Another interesting aspect of BCAA that has only recently been explored is the potential effect on weight loss. During moderate protein intake (1.5 grams/kg of body weight per day) and a lower carbohydrate (100-200 grams/day) diet, an increased intake of BCAA is thought to have positive effects on muscle protein synthesis, insulin signaling, and sparing of glucose use by stimulation of the glucose-alanine cycle. This may lead to more fat loss and a greater sparing of lean tissue compared to a calorically-matched, higher carbohydrate diet.

The New Science of Hypertrophy

While performing a set of reps under load, your body begins converting mechanical information into biochemical action. The term for this is mechanotransduction, and it's the basis for the most powerful stimulus of intracellular protein synthesis (aka hypertrophy).

Here's exactly how that works. During eccentric movement, an enzyme is dislodged from the Z-lines of muscle cells that hydrolyzes phosphatidylcholine into phosphatidic acid (PA). PA in turn binds to and activates a kinase enzyme, called mTOR, which is the "master regulator" of muscle cell protein synthesis and muscle size.

  • Many studies have demonstrated that PA activates and amplifies the "master regulatory enzyme" responsible for immediate and long term changes in muscle growth (aka protein synthesis).
  • PA bathed in-vitro with myoblast (baby muscle cells) resulted in an 8-fold increase activation of mTOR.
  • Supplemented PA increases protein synthesis via two mechanisms:  Directly, by entering the muscle cell and binding to mTOR. Indirectly, by converting to lyso-phosphatidic acid and attaching to the muscle cell membrane, which increases intracellular PA, and in turn activates mTOR.
  • PA is a phospholipid that contains two fatty acids and a phosphate group, and must be unsaturated to activate mTOR. If the fatty acids are saturated (like the PA found in eggs), then PA simply gets incorporated into the cell membrane.
  • Bioavailability of PA significantly rises in 30 minutes after dosing and stays elevated for 7 hours.
  • A study, involving resistance trained men undergoing a very intense exercise program, showed subjects supplementing with 750 mg PA per day achieved 50% greater increase in muscle cross-sectional area and lean body mass, 40% greater increase in total strength (upper and lower body) and 60% greater loss in body fat than the training-only group (Wilson et al 2014, in press).
  • Another study, involving resistance trained men undergoing an 8-week exercise program, showed subjects taking 750 mg of PA per day gained significantly more lean body mass and strength than the training-only group (Hoffman et al. 2013).
